For most, having this window into the life of a woman from such humble beginnings to becoming Oprah’s “favorite guest of all time,†would be enough to get you into this book (Oprah also contributes the book’s forward) Dr. Trent not only shares some of the many obstacles that she had to overcome to gain her dream of an exceptional education, she also shares stories from the many amazing people she has encountered along her heroic journey. Tererai challenges us to let go of the grip of the small “hungers;†so we can awaken the big hunger, the passion within, that gives meaning and worth to our existence. Although the Awakened Woman speaks specifically to women, us men can not only learn a little something about ourselves through the perspectives shared here, we can also benefit from this window into the special joys of sisterhood. Paraphrasing Muriel Rukeyser, Tererai asks, “What would happen if every woman, whether barefoot or stiletto clad—told her truth?†Like this thought, so much of what Tererai shares, resonates to today’s call for equality and diversity. I'm reading The Awakened Woman right now, and in January will be leading a discussion of The Awaken Woman with my AAUW Branch in Honolulu. Amazing job on your book. I read a lot of non-fiction books, but this is the first time since college I've highlighted key phrases that jump right out at me. Dr. Trent is an amazing woman and an inspiration to women young and old. The way she shares her life experiences from a child bride in Zimbabwe to an Internationally acclaimed advocate for women's education and empowerment is entertaining while informative. She ignites the fires in the hearts of women that are waiting to blaze a pathway to a better world through our sisterhood!
Dr. Tererai Trent's personal story is a testament to resiliency and humanity! She is an inspiration to all of us regarding what can be accomplished when you put your mind to it and are unwavering in your quest to accomplish your goals. In The Awakened Woman, Dr.Trent has created a manifesto for women to define their own destinies and a call to action to just go for their dreams.
