Well written and easy to follow. It provides a lot of detailed information about the Pi and how to work with it. It gives specific instructions on how to create a bootable SD card to run the Pi. The book explains how to work with the operating environment and examples of how to program the Pi for you own purposes. There are sections on creating interactive games and how to use the Pi to control LEDs and other items. Well worth the money.

If you're like me, you buy Dummies books not because you literally know nothing, but because of the consistency that the brand enforces. Unfortunately, I feel this book is written for people who have never seen linux before and for some reason still want to buy a raspberry pi to use as a regular computer.To be fair, had I read the cover, I would have known that. But I took it on brand faith that the Dummies book for the Raspberry Pi would be well-rounded. Thus, I am disappointed. Here were some of my "what the heck?" moments:1) A whole chapter on html and websites?2) Two chapters on Python and Pygame?3) Chapters on GIMP and LibreOffice?Ok, so Raspberry Pi is a linux machine. Got it. But none of these are really specific to the Raspberry Pi. You can do all this stuff on a Windows machine. It seemed like filler material to me.The chapters at the end on physical computing were better, but instead of starting you with breadboards and LEDs, they have you doing woodworking to build a physical game.I think there are better books out there for almost every skill level.

I bought this book because I was interested in Raspberry Pi. I am also a dummy. Makes sense.But, see, I'm not as dumb as this book thinks I am.There are exactly 6 of the 18 chapters in this book that pertain to the Raspberry Pi. And these are really, really well done. After reading them I felt comfortable with the hardware and how I should be using it. The remaining 12 chapters (the bulk of the book) run the gamut from a Python programming intro to how to use a Linux word processor.This would be great if it were titled "Computing for Dummies". But it isn't.

I reverse engineer circuits from JTAG ports to check on proprietary algorithms, so am tearing apart electronics all day long. When you look at the skyrocketing Raspberry Pi sales stats, about 70% are from folks looking to "build an inexpensive PC" whereas the other 30 are hobbyists with a few pros thrown in to chain with Propeller and other heavy hitters for more advanced applications. A few of us use them to customize testing tools, but that's another topic for another day, and NOT in this book.This book covers ALL the big questions, especially for those just opening the package. It will save you a LOT of money by:1. Showing you how to get the OS working without having to buy pre-packaged cards, which are themselves only downloads from the free sites anyway2. Not having to buy the 12 other books either out or coming out that show you (with varying quality) piece-by-piece what either the hardware, software, assembly, Linux, OS, or other levels do one by one.I'd recommend this to anyone planning to use this as an inexpensive PC, or planning on more advanced hobby work, because after you get all the pins, access, media vs. primary OS, etc. done you can then move on to more advanced, specialized applications from home automation to games, robotics, and much more.Most of the younger, most advanced programmers on the planet (I work with a LOT of them) don't have a clue about some of the older assembly-level memory tricks, etc. and when you're using an SD card instead of a big drive, the discipline is a great eye opener even for old hacks like me. This beast is nearly 500 pages, compared to a lot of "specialty" Pi books at twice the price and 1/3 the page count, and every page is packed with great stuff for beginning and intermediate users. For reference and review, at this price, I'd also recommend it to seasoned old folks too if you really want to maximize your RP skill quickly, and save money re: above.

Exactly as described, there is info, projects, samples, and it is a good all-round reference. We are quite familiar with using the Raspberry Pi and didn't need an introduction but I got this anyway for the straightforward info as it goes farther than just introducing the unit.

By the time anything on the Raspberry Pi can get in paperback, it's going to be out of date or missing the newest thing. Still, six months after publication, this book is still relevant. I bought it for my 12 year old niece who has expressed an interest in the Pi and this book will cover all of the essentials, from just using the Pi as a computer, to programming it, to building circuits around it.

Great read, clearly explains the product

If you are like me and know nothing about a Raspberry Pi, this book is for you. It takes you from a basic introduction of the hardware and Raspian (Linux) operating system and moves on to setting it up and programming it using Python. While this book won't be your only guide to using the RPi, it's certainly a good place to start. Sean McManus does of a great job of explaining it all in terms we can all understand. I recommend it.

This book has flaps in logical places: windows, doors, boxes, and really cute, detailed pictures underneath. There are only 6 pages, which I would usually complain is too short, but it works for two reasons:1. The book is large, almost a foot tall, so they fit a lot of detail into the two page spreads.2. Each page is filled with flaps, some large, some small, so there is plenty to explore on each page.This is the kind of book that a curious toddler could sit and (quietly!!!) enjoy for a good length of time. The only negative is that the flaps are flimsy and will probably end up bent or ripped.Each spread has a theme. The themes are:1. Greetings - people in the neighborhood2. Counting - fruits & veggies at the market3. Matching - packages at the post office4. Opposites - neighborhood activities5. Hide & Seek - animals at the park

My 19 months old is so taken with this book. She can spend an hour just flipping through and lifting the flaps and naming the things behind each. It is adorable. We have even turned it into a game of memory ("where is the apple? RIGHT!") which makes it even more fun. My only complaint is that she loves it so much i will likely have to buy another when the flaps start to tear off!

Good book for little ones. The tabs are a little small for my 2 year's old hands. I actually used the book for my ESL group to help them learn English vocabulary.

My son loves this book. He's 22 months and enjoys announcing what's under each flap before he opens it. We also use it as a memory game, where I ask him where one of the objects under the flaps are and he then finds it by opening the right flap. He has torn a couple of the flaps because he has a bit of a destructive and curious streak, but this has provided hours of entertainment.

Our grandson adores lift the flap adventures, and everyone loves curious George. How could it be any better than that?

This is one of my favorite lift-the-flap books. The illustrations look like pencil and watercolor drawings from the original series. Each page shows a scene from George's world. This book features a TON of flaps, some big, most medium, some teeny tiny but all of them make sense within the scene and really make the book seem like a private glimpse into George's well-known world.I often find my two-year-old laying on the floor of her room with this book spread in front of her as she pours over each page. This is a great book for a rainy day, long plane flight or drive.

My 18 month old LOVES this book. And I like that the flaps are sturdy.. for the most part. He did manage to tear some but compared to any other flap book it's great. There's a story line and there's so much to look at and point out that I can enjoy it as well. Over and over and over again... and over and over.. you know how it goes when they like a book.Highly recommended. And as the other review; wish there was more like this one.

Really fun book. The flaps are durable and there are lots of them.I agree that there isn't a flowing story line. The plot is very simple George and his friend walk through town, they go to the market and then the post office, there is a dog throughout the book and... the "adventure" is that the dog gets lost and George has to find him at the park (on the last page)- I know, I should have put a spoiler alert. I would put the age of interest from 1-4yrs. My LO needed help opening the flaps the first couple of times through (they fit tight and you have to pry up with fingernail), but now that it is worn in it is easy. While it has a lot going on in each page, it doesn't seem overwhelming. Perhaps that is because you focus on each area individually when you interact with the flaps.Pros:1. Lots of flaps2. Flaps are durable3. Can be used to play memory games4. Enforces concept of object permanence5. Entertaining6. Illustration are in the style of original Curious George books7. Plus the things listed on the description: "like counting, opposites, and matching"Considerations:1. It is a big book and my LO needs me to help him hold it (so he can lift the flaps)2. If your child is rough on books then I'm sure the flaps can be torn off3. An older child may bore quickly with it since it doesn't have an enrapturing plot

Liz's "As Old As Time" is the best out of all of them. "Once Upon A Dream" is better than "A Whole New World" but it's still not super great. I got bored really easily. It was a nice concept but it just took too long to get to the point.

An interesting concept, but the story is slow to get going. The writing is mediocre and an excessive amount of time is spent describing the same things over and over. The last 100 pages were probably the best. The book could have benefited from a strong editor. Not inspired to read anything else by the author.

I am a huge Sleeping Beauty fan and I loved this book. It is a beautiful reimagining of the story. The characters of both Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip are well developed and there are great themes about female empowerment, self discovery, empathy, overcoming depression and what loving someone really means. I can't wait to read the other books in the series. If you enjoyed Meleficent or Wicked, or Tangled, I think you will enjoy this book.

I enjoyed the original story and the Disney film of Sleeping Beauty. This book is based on both, and gets even darker than the Disney film, but not quite as dark as the original story. It focuses on Aurora, as expected, but also focuses more on Maleficent and Prince Phillip, the latter of which didn't get much focus in the film and wasn't exactly an upstanding person in the original tale. It's nice to see he has a part in the story too, when he and Aurora genuinely loved each other in the Disney film. Braswell's expansion of the whole story has been very enjoyable to read and I look forward to reading more of her novels when I get the chance.

 If you love Disney you will love the twisted Tale series.

This book ind of started out slow, but got super good. For sure an interesting view on the whole story and took a little bit to wrap my head around it. But overall it was a great book.

This book is ridiculously bad. It seemed okay at first, but as soon as Aurora meets the prince, it becomes unbearable. Their relationship is awkward in a terrible way. If you’re not an avid reader, you may enjoy this book, otherwise I would pick up something else. The language seems like it’s meant for 3rd graders and the adjectives are ad-libbed in just to have an extra word. I did want to pick up the other Disney stories, but they have fallen to the very bottom of my next-to-read list.

These books have gotten my ten year old to start reading everyday! Thank you! She loves the stories and so do I, I’ll be buying every one of them.

This is a really thoughtful, well-written memoir that tackles the Big Questions: What is faith? Who is your family? What does it mean to live a fully authentic life? Who are we, really?I have very little in common with the author other than that we're both female and we both married young, and both experienced the power of religion. But I think she does a fantastic job cutting to the chase of the questions above, and providing some real, thought-provoking, and non-judgmental answers. Yes, she left Hasidic life. But her description of that life, and its appeal, is incredibly powerful without being the least bit nostalgic. She doesn't regret her decision to leave, but she honors all the factors that went in to her decision to stay for so long.That's really hard to do, and she's done a superlative job.

A wonderful book, 'Uncovered' is vivid and compelling, spanning the spiritual to the painful, the crushing to the triumphant. Extraordinarily frank about her most intimate thoughts and experiences, the author carried me not only into her life, but back into my own.On the surface, 'Uncovered' relates the journey of a maturing woman living as a Hasidic Jew after leaving a difficult family environment. Non-Jews, like myself, interested in what it feels like to lead this other life, will find 'Uncovered' fascinating.However, as much as I learned about the Hasidim, this is not what makes this book important to me personally. Although I do not share the author's religious background, gender, or family trauma, I clearly see myself in 'Uncovered'. This is both because the author so vividly portrays her inner life and because she chronicles struggles that I (and doubtless everyone) must deal with.I recognize in her a person, like myself, who was burdened with unwanted challenges and shrouded misconceptions about self and world. "Uncovered" becomes a metaphor for our discovering the scars of life and consequent misunderstandings, so difficult to recognize from the inside. For me, life's major challenge has been to find the scars and to discover, confront, and discard my many misconceptions. I've learned this difficult, but the author shows it can be done. In that sense 'Uncovered' is a tutorial by example of how to engage ethical, authentic life and to uncover and meet true self.I'm halfway through 'Uncovered' a second time. Rich and deep, on second reading it's a new book. I feel like I've met a new person and made a friend.A thoughtful and valuable book that would have helped me as a young adult needing a model for discarding obsolete notions and moving on to a new life.

I read a lot of memoirs, but this is one that certainly deserves 5 stars. The author gives a vivid description of her life as a Hasidic Jew--the arranged marriage, raising her children, the rituals, the role of women in the community and in the home. Her writing style is crisp, clear, and heartfelt. But the book is really about individuation, about the author's journey to becoming her own true self--and for this reason I believe it will resonate with a broad audience, men and women, gay and straight. A quiet book that is also bold and generous, especially as the author shares the risks and challenges--and joys--that come with major life decisions at mid-life. I highly recommend it.

Just finished this memoir. Stunning book. Her writing style is so beautiful and thoughtful. I hated for the book to end, actually. Leah Lax is a brave woman who chose a path as a teenager and realized in adulthood she needed to go down a different road. It's a thoroughly absorbing read. Although she left the Hasidic life and her husband, she treats both with respect in her memoir. I absolutely loved this book. Highly recommend.

It's too difficult for me to put into words how affecting Leah Lax's courageous journey is. You just have to read it for yourself. Be prepared to be speechless for a time afterwards -- you will be mulling over life's Big Questions and marveling at her courage and integrity. Lax is not one to stand on sidelines; she "goes there" throughout this book, with respect and passion -- and doubts, too. And to top it all off, she happens to be a stunning writer. I had the pleasure of meeting Leah at the Vermont Studio Center at some point in the last decade and heard her read a portion of what has become Uncovered. Those of us who heard her read that night have been waiting eagerly for the finished book to appear. It has been well worth the wait!

This is not the most cohesive work, rather a crafted story of an extreme JewishWoman, an educated musician who spent twenty five years and several children to finally realize men lie. It started with her green music room her new husband promised but never allowed. Frankly, I wasted my money reading this.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this book since I did not read any summary. As I read, the various perspectives that readers would bring to the reading began to present themselves. Both devout and rebellious Hasidic eyes are seeing Leah's true life unfold. Stifled women see they have a voice and must find it. Leah emerges from her orthodox woman's life into that of a happy lesbian woman, seeking a newly defined God. She realized that truth was always present even if she could not speak it. Her path to self discovery came through the process of memoir writing which led her to expanded horizons and speaking her truth to herself.

 I simply love this cookbook. To date, I own only two 'Cook This, Not That' books. I never had the time to really try any of the recipes when I originally bought it but since I had a the time (forced vacation), why not entertain myself? And this proved quick, easy and healthy.First chapter, like the other books, went over simple replacements for the pantry. How one product is slightly better than another and with stats to state the argument. Then the rest of the chapters were the recipes for breakfast, poultry, fish, etc. Each section had about 6-8 recipes. What was especially nice was that there was an image right next to each and every recipe. Since I'm a visual person, this was a major plus. The directions were very easy to follow and not overly complicated. The ingredients are easily available and should be available in your pantry. I did had to buy a few things but they were on my to-buy list in any case.So far, I made 7 recipes - the cheese fries (p. 78), asparagus with fried egg and prosciutto (p. 110), Italian meatball soup (p. 112 - I've already made this twice in the last week), mac & cheese (p. 150), manicotti (p. 154), the roast salmon with lentils (p. 250), and the molten chocolate (p. 344). And they were delicious! Unfortunately I don't have pictures since I'm horrible at plating and taking photographs. But take my word, these were awesomely good. Even my picky eater brother liked it. I did do a few modifications since I didn't have all the ingredients on hand (like kale for escarole) but the recipes were robust enough to handle the adjustments.If you don't own any others in the series, get this one. If you do, I can't say if there are a lot of repeated recipes. In comparison to the other one I own, there were three duplicates. But not enough to turn me away. There was plenty of well-known recipes that had been healthy-upped without sacrificing taste. However, this is not a vegan, gluten-free, or anyone with dietary restrictions-kind of cookbook. The recipes can be modified to your own tastes and diet. But overall, I'm super happy with my purchase and definitely keeping it in my collection.

I could not be happier about purchasing this cook book. I have had many cook books before and I never really loved the content of the book. This book has the best recipes for the typical comfort foods that I am always craving. It is nice to have a healthier way of making these comfort meals. I have actually never seen a comfort food cook book that has healthier recipes in it. I have also looked at other books in this series, like the Grill this, not that book and this one is my favorite. This cook book compares comfort foods from many popular restaurants and gives a healthier version of that recipe. It has everything from snacks to dessert to seafood! It also shows the basic steps to make a meal in a crockpot from scratch and how to make meatballs. It has many useful tips for cooking that are not found in many other books. We have loved every recipe that we have tried from this cook book. I have saved many recipes from all of them. It actually took me a little while to find this book available for purchase. Many book stores do not carry this book either in store or online. Of course when I did find it online, Amazon had the lowest price. I have and will continue to recommend this book to friends and family. It is the best way to eat a little healthier and still enjoy delicious comfort foods.

I PURCHASE EVERY NEW ONE & OWN 10 OR (sorry for shouting) more actual books, as well as downloaded on my new kindle, duplicates of books I already own. So much easier than bringing 3 to 4 books from house to work to car. Love my kindle, too. These are my weight loss Bibles. Friends & family ask how hard it was, what did I do. It was so easy I still can't believe it! Am at a plateau, but have kept off (other than 5 lbs up & down) what I lost for for more than 5 months. Winter sucks! I also recommend Rocco DiSpirito, Eat This Now, excellent recipes & Hungry Girl(minus EVERYTHING being fat free. Low fat works if you're aware of your portions. Also, bought all my books through Amazon. Used like New. And every one was like new! For a fraction of the cost. Good Luck and Don't Give Up!

First book i have bought from the cook this not that line but i must say it is a fantastic read. I have many cook books that i have bought but this one may be my favorite just because it focuses on cooking foods that one would actually want to eat. Comfort foods made in a way that lowers the fat/calorie content but still keeps the food tasting the way it should. Anyone can lose wait by eating plates of vegetables and drinking water all day but this book focuses on taking food that most people grew up and presenting it in a way to cut back on a lot of the fat. They also point out just how much fat, sodium, and calories are hidden behind a lot of the favorite restaurants that the mass majority frequently dine at. The Chee$e cake factory being one of them. I have cooked a few recipes so far from the book and i must say they are delicious. To each their own I guess but I was really shocked at how many little post it note tabs i put in this book for recipes that i had to try.

This book is full of useful information on staple items for your pantry, tips on creating healthy recipes and easy recipes that can be swapped out for favorites at nationally know restaurants. The other interesting aspect of this book is the information concerning the restaurants with the least healthy food so even if you do not cook at home and eat out more this book will help you avoid the unhealthy selections on the menu. The one thing I learned was some of the items that you would think are the healthy more then likely are not healthy at all. As for the recipes most are pretty easy to make and taste really good. Following the recipes in the book I've managed to take of ten pounds with little to no exercise while recovering from a knee injury. If you're looking to lose some weight or just eat healthier this book is a good choice.

The TERRY LAUGHLIN books for people who like to swim are a big help. I learned to swim on my own and being able to read the instructions on what "real swimmers" do will help anyone who wants to exercise with less pain or perspiring!

Instant improvement in the swimming pool, very hard to believe in at first. This book will not only improve your technique, but also set a foundation for understanding of your movement through water. The philosophy of relaxed gliding with minimum drag and maximum efficiency can be fun to practice in other areas outside the swimming pool.At one point, after counting my strokes and being confused by the result, I wondered if Terry is actually a fish?

I purchased this book AFTER buying various TI DVD's - and having the combined written technique recommendations made a huge difference in my swimming overnight. Now, don't get me wrong I'm not one of those people who magically can swim 3 miles after watching a dvd or reading the book - but it truly enhanced my ability to be weightless in the water, and thus improved my whole attitude about swimming. The book does a great job explaining why we "struggle" in the water, and some simple technique changes to fix that, which results in being less tired. I am all about being less tired - and THIS really works. I recommend a combination of this book, and the TI DVD for Perpertual Motion freestyle in 10 lessons -- and you won't be disappointed (unless you prefer to pay money for a coach to be in the water with you). The video is for the self coached mentality, and a person who has some discipline and passion to improve.

This is a great book for someone like me who wants to perfect technique. It is a pleasure to read, fantastic recommendations.

I have been a swimmer my entire life. I am 60. For the first time EVER! I am swimming hours, not laps. Hour's. It's as though I have no level of exhaustion. This manner of swimming will change the 'struggle' to remain on top of the water, to gracefully parting through the water, without a sense of panic. For people who struggle to swim as adult's this is the answer. It will change your manner of swimming for life. Just this week, I swam and hour and a half. Not counting laps, not counting strokes. When I exited the pool I felt as though I'd been on a long stroll! This is life changing, not just exercise.

I had the opportunity to meet both Jane Jacobs (Thanks to Richard Keeley of Boston College, her papers are housed at BC and she visited with students and numerous occasions) and listen to Peter Laurence discuss his book at BC. This fine book does justice to a remarkable life and illuminates an important period in Jane Jacobs development and thinking. It is a must read for people who want to know more about her and who want to explore cities in more depth. Read it along side her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities and Caro's The Power Broker.

This was an extremely thorough and fascinating look into the life and career of Jacobs. The manner in which it explains the plethora of people and ideas that influenced Jacobs in her work and policies is distinctive compared all other texts I have read on Jacobs. The book is also very easily readable and compelling; for as rigorously researched as the content of the book is, the tale of Jacobs' life is smooth and feels effortless, a testament to Laurence's skilled biographic storytelling. I would recommend this to students, academics, professionals, and scholars at all levels interested in gaining unique insight into the person, writer, planner, and advocate that was Jane Jacobs.

Food and medicine are scarce, the economy is a shambles, electricity can't be counted on, and now Hurricanes Oscar and Pearl have combined to form a superhurricane that is headed up the East Coast. Weyn's future has a grimly plausible feeling to it that will draw in readers. She does resort to a deus ex machina to save the day, and the characters and situations aren't fully fleshed out. We really have no idea how much we rely on fossil fuels in this world. When I think of a gas shortage, I think of having to cut down on driving, but really had never thought of just how many products are petroleum based, from toothpaste to ball point pens. Our reliance on fossil fuels is terrifying, and Empty by Suzanne Weyn shows just how quickly everything can fall apart.Sage Valley is your average town full of middle class folks who work hard every day and live their lives as though nothing in the world will ever drastically change. When a global-wide oil shortage begins, however, they are in for a rude awakening. Suddenly kids are biking to school. Sports teams stop because they can't drive to the opposing schools. Gas costs $40, $60, then $90 dollars per gallon. People can't heat their homes. Medicines are in short supply. Food deliveries stop. Very quickly, people start to get desperate.Tom is your average second-string football player who only worries about his crush, head cheerleader Nicki. When the gas shortage begins, his biggest concern is not being able to drive her home. Nicki's biggest concern is having to wear her glasses because there haven't been any deliveries of her contacts to the pharmacy in a long time. Gwen has gone from the outcast to the only kid who has a warm house thanks to her brother's black market dealings. As if the gas shortage wasn't the worst problem, the climate change is finally about to get the better of them. Two enormous hurricanes from the gulf coast and the East Coast merge and make their way up the East to practically destroy everything in their "superhurricane" path. Disaster relief is virtually nonexistent in the current times, and Sage Valley is left to survive by its own devices.This is not only a story of how everything falls apart (although that is certainly in the foreground). It is also a story of how tragedy brings people together. How people in dire circumstances can become selfless. Heroes even. It is also a story of how things need to change if we are to survive. Towards the end of the story, the kids find a "Green" house that was built to be self-sustainable with low amounts of electricity, food production, and heat. Are we prepared for what is going to happen when the non-renewable resources we gobble up are gone?In the deluge of apocalyptic books these days, this is a fairly good one, especially for adolescents. It directly deals with their lives and can be an eye-opener for just how drastically their worlds can change. Sometimes it is hard for kids to understand how things truly affect them, like wars, natural disasters, etc., until they are in their backyards. This book puts the disaster in the worlds of these kids. It is also a fairly short, low-skilled book that would be perfect for younger or low-skilled students. The plus is that it isn't nearly as depressing as some of the stuff out there. Sure everything changes, but that doesn't mean it needs to be the end of the world! We can still find ways to survive, even in circumstances we never thought we would face!

I had high hopes when I picked up this book. The plot/scenario sounded interesting - no matter what side of the "green" debate one stands on, I don't think anyone can deny that oil *will* run out some day, whether it's in the near future or a few generations from now - and I've grown used to young adult books dealing with dystopian, apocalyptic or just plain disaster plots in an intelligent and decently written way.So, yes, "Empty" held a lot of promise for me. Unfortunately what it turned out to be was a book that read like a lecture aimed at ten-year-olds (or perhaps eight-year-olds), certainly not young adults - although the half-hearted attempt at romance and characters in their later teens seemed to indicate otherwise. The language and narrative style were so simplistic it was hard to get truly interested and the lecturing, the "message" came through so hard and clear that it occasionally nearly turned me off (and I'm by and large a supporter of the ideas being promoted here).That's not to say the book was *all* bad - it was a quick and at times not completely dull read, and the characters, while not exactly engaging or with a huge amount of personality, weren't off-putting. Might be a decent read for a child / pre-teen who is interested in saving the planet and life without oil, I suppose.

We used this book as a book study in my 8th grade science classroom. The book started out really great, but the huge hurricane seemed to come out of nowhere. My kids were super annoyed with the ending.

This author has shown the tragedy and hope of our depletion of nonrenwable resources. So many people disregard concerns today in terms of this situation. An excellent read for students!

Received this book in excellent brand new condition. This was purchased as required reading for my daughters science class.

This book was very interesting to read for me. I noticed many other reviews said this book is poorly written, but also that the reader did not finish the book. I will admit that in the beginning, the book is dull and lacked dialogue. Apparently, the author had never heard of the expresion"Show not tell." But as the book progressed, things started to happen and get more interesting. It was almost as if the bad author left off in the middle of the book and another better writer took over. I overall enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to anyone who is willing to bear through the first few chapters and not just give up on it.

This is a very good book but very short. This is not to say, however, that it does not make a lasting impression. This highly probably dystopian future spells out our dependency on non-renewable energy sources and makes a compelling argument for alternative energy sources. Complex, relatable, characters who develop as the book goes on. Enjoyable!

I had this book last year and lost it while I was in the middle. I just had to buy it again so I could finish it!

I never realized, until recently, how important it is to understand the 'story' of religion. The West is suffering from a black void of silence stemming from an over abundance of monotheistic, fundamentalist pigeonholing that has done a very good job of putting a blanket over the history of humans and their relationships to the gods they create. I've found books like this one to be an exquisite appeal to the realization that God - in the ideal sense - or whatever power we imagine exists, took the image of a woman.Of course there are things that I (personally) disagree with. The concept of a goddess, or THE Goddess, appears to be a reaction to the Christian Father-God and it's debatable whether the Venus Figurines, for example, represent a supernatural feminine being or an animistic force seen in the feminine form. Unlike some literature on female deity, the authors do approach these conundrums with a tact and grace missing from other works.The book is thick and juicy. What I liked the most is the fact that they include the Virgin Mary and the Gnostic Sophia as apart of the 'goddess' chain. Far too many works, for some reason, either ignore Mary completely or sort of gloss over her while focusing heavily on much older female figurines which, while beautiful, perhaps cannot connect with us in our technological age, where their symbols and desires are no longer experienced or, cannot be because of cultural implications.What is really beautiful about this book is not what it says but what it doesn't say - what it leaves behind in the reader. As someone who straddles the edge of the atheist cliff while also craving a solution to my rocky religious upbringing, 'belief' only has started to make sense for me when I see it now, not as the complete destruction of pagan gods and demons but the growth of myth as it flows, naturally, through time and space. I have hope that in the future we will begin to understand more, the creative impulse interpreted through a feminine lens as we have the masculine. These books are not perfect, are flawed in some ways but highly precious in many others.

I've read numerous books on the topic of ancient goddesses and goddess-centered religions, and this book is one of my favorites. Because it's so lengthy, it covers a great deal of ground, and it's unusual in that it covers the Judeo-Christian religions. I wish it had a sequel that covered other cultures and mythologies. This book is well-researched and superbly written (and edited). The photos (although only black and white) are great, and include many that I have never seen before.Aside from discussing ancient goddesses, this book also talks a great deal about how we humans no longer see all of nature as part of the divine. I'm actually an atheist, but I believe that embracing nature in religious beliefs and practices can only help us (and the earth). It's sad that so many religions lost this connection.My copy of this book has highlighted and notated sections on almost every page. I could not put it down! Even though I already know a bit about this topic, I learned so much more from this important book. Don't let the size of this book intimidate you; if you are interested in the ancient past, when god was imagined as a woman and women held more important roles in the religions of the day, you must get this book.

On the whole, this is a very good book. It is mostly insightful and allows readers of almost any level to make connections between different goddess stories and icons from the Palaeolithic into the early Christian world. The discussion of Crete as an isolated point connecting the Neolithic goddess to later civilisations is quite engaging. The study of the Hebrew culture and the misogyny of the Old Testament is also quite enlightening. The only fault, and the reason for four stars instead of five, is the tendencies to over-romanticise the Nelothic world as peaceful paradise of perfect gender equality. There is certainly a case to be made that large-scale warfare was uncommon at the time, but weapons did exists, and it was not all that and a bag of crisps as Cashford implies. Still, this is a good and necessary book, and well worth a read.

This is a measured account, backed by numerous references, in a studious approach, to the history of evolving conscious down the centuries, from Palaeolithic, Neolithic to the Iron Age. This chronology follows the harmonious cycle of life in completeness through the various Goddesses and Gods that people related to in comprehending by deification the evolution of their consciousness in awareness of the meaning of Life, recognised as being crucially interdependent on Earth, matter and regeneration through the feminine. The Eurasian background history then recounts how the feminine was eliminated largely through the Babylonians and reinforced by the Niocene Church, the founders of our present Holy Bible. Effectively, through the Niocene message of faith and unquestioning belief, the religious edicts arrested the continued evolution of enquiry into our consciousness.The detailed objectivity of the author's approach makes it an outstanding reference to our western human history up to the contemporary in context of how our present paternalistic behaviour still dictates how society functions in our present civilisation..

This is a book, which transcends generations. The fact of it is that there are many truths in it. It transcends generations. It should be an eyeopener to any Fundalmentalist reader, as it takes you to a quite literally lost time and place and shows us the import of good research and staying grounded. It was the cornerstone work for my Ancient History class, not Graves, not Gimbutas and not Merlin Stone. FANTASTIC work. All other books on the Goddess from prehistory pale in this books wake.
