Barry Oshry, a pioneer in systems thinking, is the creator of Power Lab, the Organization Workshop on Creating Partnership, which he has conducted in hundreds of organizations in the U.S. and around the world. He and his wife and partner, Karen Ellis Oshry, are cofounders of Power & Systems, Inc., an educational institute dedicated to providing programs and publications that deepen people's understanding of social system phenomena. A former Chairman of the Department of Human Relations at Boston University, Oshry has presented keynote addresses and workshops for the Association of Quality and Participation, the American Management Association, the Organizational Development Network, and GOAL/QPC.

No book is life changing but this definitely opens your eyes to the way organizations and society in general works. I am not sure all the techniques used in Oshray's research are totally ethical but the results are solid and reproducible. Fascinating and hard hitting at once.
Barry Oshry is a sociologist and brings a systems perspective to organizations. This is a great supportive volume for those already familiar with his models. I think he is one of the most helpful systems thinkers there is. Lots of case studies and illustrations of his main ideas.
This is one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Barry Oshry puts power in the middle of the analysis of relationships. He’s very brave to tackle this subject. I couldn’t put the book down, and kept thinking of his concepts for a long time.

Not sure about the author's agenda in writing the book - I just left like I was reading the TV version of a Survivor episode.There are many other books better able to offer Leadership theory.
I was introduced to Barry Oshry's work when I bought Seeing Systems. I can't recommend Seeing Systems too highly.Reading Leading Systems second was appropriate as it detailed what participants experience in one of Oshry's workshops (a simulation not described in detail in Seeing Systems). Often the book reads like a novel as Oshry describes the behaviors of key players or the behaviors of one of the groups as they struggle with issues in the community setting of the workshop.Oshry shares how he was thinking when he had a chance to be a participant in his own workshop and in settings in which he was personally involved. He believes a leader can do much to influence outcomes and he creatively struggles to find ways to perturb the situation toward a better life for all in the setting. This is best done with a knowledge of systems.Near the end of the book, Oshry shares an experience of being shafted by an organization and his response to it. Most of us, being members of organizations, can relate. I read an excerpt of this incident to a group of downtrodden teachers and I heard a number of them catch their breath at the power of his thoughts and words.His creative, yet peaceful and constructive response was an example of how we can be with each other and, for me, was worth the price of the book. A study of systemic relationships within a power system using a description of the emotional and other consequences of being in different power positions within an organisation, based on experience from a set of structured simulations or extended workshops.The Power Lab is essentially a total immersion simulation 'played' over ten days. It is based on a construct in which there are 'elites', 'middles' and 'immigrants', each with a defined role and each, in a sense, dependent on the others. They are thrown into a situation which is systemically designed to throw the interdependencies and tensions into sharp relief. This is, of course, a reasonable reflection of the situation ordinarily found inside a typical organisation, although apparently built in a somewhat stark and exaggerated form. The book does not make it clear whether the failure of participants to challenge and overthrow the entire framework is a product of the rules, the expectations of the participants or the dynamics of the system.If you accept the basic framework, the messages that come out of the experience are useful, but hardly surprising.
