It becomes a fast-paced murder mystery. I went from page 10-160 in a day and had a hard time putting this down. Secrets, lies, thievery, murder, and forbidden romance, this book has all of this. Keralie finds out something she did not intend to when she opened the package that she stole. Her boss wanted her to find that package and it seems that he was planning on what happened next as well. In order to keep Keralie's wicked boss from seeing what is on the chips, Keralie ingests them and by doing so, witnesses what is on the chips almost as if they were her own memories. Memory chips are inside the package and they contain disturbing images of the death of the 4 queens. (Hence the title of the book) It seems that they were found before these deaths occured. So if Keralie and Varin hurry, they could save the surviving queens before it is too late.
I so enjoyed this book! I loved how the story unfolded and kept me turning the page! Keralie grows so much in this story and Varin along with her. They helped each other see what they could be in the future. That he didn’t have to be a messenger with a looming death date and she doesn’t need to be a Thief. I would highly recommend!
Saw a commercial for this book and decided it looked good so I bought it. I started reading it the day it arrived and couldn't put it down. I loved how the suspense kept you drawn in and needing to know more. I love the character development and I would love to see it made into a movie. And I look forward to more novels from Astrid. A definite must read for sure.
I loved it!!!!! This book was such a fun read! There were twists and turns that you never see coming, as well as characters and a world you just want more of. Such an amazing debut from an author I’m sure will be a star.
As I read the descriptions of the characters, my mind kept going to how they would look on the big screen. The story is well written, very descriptive and interesting. This land is made of four quadrants and each quadrant has a queen. Each quadrant is very different. One is farming and obtaining natural resources - without electricity, another is developing technology and medicine, another produces arts, fashion and entertainment, while the fourth arranged imports and exports for all the quadrants. Each quadrant has a queen. Until the queens start getting killed. The story surrounds the mystery of the murders, the whos, the hows and the whys.
Four Dead Queens was an engaging read with lots of twists and turns that ended with a shocker. (Didn’t see that one coming!). The writing style was fast pace, and the method of each chapter switching from one character’s view point to another really kept me engaged. The characters were fleshed-out and believable, and the descriptions of the four realms ruled by the four queens were pretty in-depth. But I hope the final version of the book has a map of the world. A map would have help to visualize where the realms were in relation to each other. (I read an ARC which was not complete, and had quite a few editing errors.)But as much as I was shocked by the ending I was also a little disappointed with the ramifications of the murders. I don't want to include any spoilers but I personally think Lyker would have tried to murder the person that killed the love of his life. I just thought the final outcome was a little too fluffy and unrealistic, but a good read nonetheless.
Four Dead Queens is Astrid Scholte’s debut novel; though she’s not new to the world of writing. Before she decided to dive headfirst into books (which I can already tell you was a brilliant decision) she was a writer for film and television. What first caught my attention to Four Dead Queens had to be the cover. I love the bright turquoise over the dark background, with the silver font. Having all the crowns be in different styles was a nice touch as well. Though I’ll confess that for the briefest moment I thought this was another book by Kendra Blake thanks to all of the crowns on the cover. That misunderstanding didn’t last long though, I can promise you that. The novel is based on a nation divided into four. Thus the need for four queens. Each queen rules her district, and there’s very little crossing that happens between each one. The districts are; Toria (the intellectual quarter), Ludia (the emotional quarter), Archia (the agricultural quarter), and finally Eonia (the futurist quarter – not to be mistaken for Toria). Naturally the nation is named Quadara – nothing else really would have made sense, now would it? The queens all rule from the same throne rule, also split into four, but they don’t make joint decisions. At least not about the individual districts.Warnings first: There are some scenes, both ones that actually occurred and those pictured or described that are fairly graphic. They all pertain to the plotting and murdering of the four queens. For the record, you can usually tell when one of these scenes is about to happen, so if it is disturbing to you it could be easily skipped.I’ll confess that I was somewhat hesitant to read a book titled ‘Four Dead Queens.’ While I’ll admit that I could tell, from the title alone, that it could have a lot of potential for intrigue and fascination…I was worried that it’d be a heavy tale. I’m sure that’s understandable, since the title sort of implies that four queens will be dying imminently. But then I went and read the except over at BookishFirst, and I was immediately enthralled. I just knew I had to read all of it, and sooner rather than later. My favorite part about Four Dead Queens is that I walked into it with an assumption being made; that four queens were dead or going to die, only to have that thrown into question. For a while nothing was clear, not even the accuracy of the title. And I really liked that. Scholte managed to throw some surprises at us with what seemed like the only part of the plot set in stone. That I couldn’t predict how the rest of it would go from there was wonderful. It was all masterfully done.I was pleasantly surprised by the choices made for perspectives in this book. While I would have assumed that the queens would be shown in their own perspectives (and I was right on that count) I wouldn’t have expected Keralie at all. She’s seemingly uninvolved in any of it, but somehow ends up in the center of the mess before the end.I really enjoyed Keralie’s character in particular, though there were one or two queens that I was fond of as well. Keralie absolutely had the most character growth during the course of the novel. She took some blows, both emotionally and physically, and she came out stronger for it in the end. I love it.I can’t wait to see what Scholte does for her next book. Hopefully we’ll get some hints soon! I don’t think it’ll be a sequel to Four Dead Queens, but then again I could be wrong. Regardless I’m looking forward to hearing more about whatever book it’ll end up being.
