Fabulous . . . A must have for the person who wants to learn about these stones. Far more information than you would expect in a small book.
I'm a huge collector of turquoise jewelry. i bought this book to help me learn more about the different turquoise stones as well as the mines that they came from. i only gave it 4 stars because i do wish it was a bigger book. i feel like they left stuff out but they did put in a good amount of information. if you are looking for a beginning book for learning about turquoise then i recommend this book! if you are looking for more in depth information then i would keep looking.
I was expecting so much more from this book based on the reviews of others. The pictures are beautiful but this book does not discuss how to spot fake jewelry nor does it discuss how to tell if turquoise is natural or not. The book also does not show pictures of different types of the same turquoise; for example it does not show the wide range of different stones that supposedly come from Kingman. I am a collector and wanted this book so that I could recognize the real deal but while the book is informative it will not help guide you in spotting fake jewelry or stones.
I have been a gem and mineral dealer for over ten years...and a rockhound for a lot longer than that...but this book taught me more in a single sitting than all my years in the buisiness and in the hobby.I have dug, traded, bought and sold a whole bunch of "Turq"...natural, treated and "color-shot"...and this book instantly became my favorite reference for the rest of my life.If you are planning on investing in real American or Persian turquoise jewelry or stones...and it is an investment...then this book is a "Must Have!"No sooner did I put this book down than I called up one of my suppliers and bought all of the Blue Gem and Turquoise Mountain stones they had left in stock...I am sure they are wondering what precipitated that call!My many thanks to the Lowry family for their labor of love...from the "Turq" Museum to this book...and I hope we cross paths real soon.
a good book overall, worth the price. Mostly an introduction and not complete, but have found no book that is. Goes into basic descriptions of history, mining, types of turquoise for jewelry (stabilized, colored, etc.) which was helpful to make one aware of what to look for and what to ask seller's as to the processing of the stone. I also bought the large coffee table book on turquoise, which had beautiful pictures and listed more types of turquoise, but was really not as helpful as this little book.
I'm planning a trip to New Mexico in 6 months, and bought this as a primer for a base education in turquoise jewelry. Don't buy without it! I'm looking forward to a visit to the turquoise museum the author owns.
A very nice book with excellent, well-rounded coverage of the subject. Lots of history and images identifying the major mines. Nicely designed too, which I enjoy.
I found out about this book when buying some Native American jewelry at The Trading Post in Garden of the Gods. It is pretty cool as it tells a lot about where genuine American turquoise mines are and what the turquoise looks like. I have gotten to the point in my Native American jewelry collection that I want a signed piece and what to know where the turquoise originated. I would prefer a US mine but many gem quality stones come from Asia. Beware the cheap, non-guaranteed, non-signed stuff if you really care about what you're buying.
Decent little primer on turquoise ( I think others said this in their reviews too). Covered a lot of ground, not too specific, but specific enough for a small book. Very nice pictures and examples of what was disccussed and referenced in the text. This book is worth the money. I might add that I bought this book used, listed as good condition. .. from Jensen Online Inc. Come to find out the book did not look like it was ever used. It was excellent condition, shipped free and came quickly. Good job Jensen Online Inc.Regards, Pag
