My first book by Donna Hatch, but certainly NOT my last -- I have already bought the other three books in the series because this one was so good. Once I started reading, I groaned at every interruption -- all I wanted to do was read!Alicia has lost almost her whole family - there is only her sister left now. Their uncle has inherited, but somehow their fortune has disappeared as well. Alicia MUST marry wealth in order to save them all. Alicia wants to do her duty, but is repulsed by the ancient, controlling suitors her uncle is choosing for her. She'll do her duty, but only at the last minute because she couldn't stand doing it sooner.Cole is immediately attracted to Alicia, but she blames him for the death of her twin and won't have anything to do with him. Cole has secrets of his own and doesn't feel deserving of Alicia - but he still wants to protect her from her fate. He introduces her to his cousin badly scarred and injured cousin Nicholas so he can save her.It isn't hard to figure out who Nicholas is -- but you'll read the rest of the book trying to prove your theory and figure out how.I'm looking forward to the other books in the series!

I stumbled across this book when I was just browsing and I am really glad I did. Alecia is in the position of having to marry for money in order to save what is left of her family. Her parents are dead from a carriage accident, her brother from a duel. She and her sister rely on their uncle and his son. Their uncle's investments have all failed and their cousin drinks. It is all up to Alecia. However, she is repulsed by the candidates her uncle puts the forward. Then she meets Cole Amesbury and he seems to be the answer to her prayers. He is titled, wealthy, and incredibly handsome. However, he has one attribute that puts him off the list. He is responsible for her brother's demise.I loved this book. It has danger, suspense, mystery, and a wonderful love story. I see that many feel it is a copy of A Rose in Winter. I read that book, but it was over twenty years ago. I honestly don't remember. The same plot lines are used over and over in any genre. It is how they are combined and put forth that makes them different. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I'm not entirely sure how I managed to finish the book. I think I was just driven to know how the author would manage to resolve everything in the book. It was such an awkward and uncomfortable mess. The beginning was really interesting and captivated me but then it just got weirder and more awkward and uncomfortable the longer the book went on, and it seemed to go on forever! Alicia married to another but having a completely inappropriate relationship with another man, and flitting back and forth between the two constantly. Yes there was a plot twist at the end that I didn't see coming that managed to resolve the issue, but it still didn't make the whole rest of the book somehow okay! I wouldn't recommend this book. The author is really good but I think this was just a bad plot and character choice. I have hopes her other books are better.

Alicia needs to marry wealth, and fast; Cole is the most attractive option, but she's too bitter about his part in her brother's death to agree, and instead marries Nicholas, a man who hides apparent deformities under a mask.(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)Plot and Setting: 3.5 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. I was quite certain of who Nicholas was under the mask from the start, but enjoyed spending the rest of the book trying to prove my theory until it was at last confirmed. But I would've preferred if that was the main focus of the plot, without the constant dangers and conspiracy against Alicia's family. The two pieces did overlap and influence each other at times, but they were so different that neither felt fully focused or polished. Setting (including timeline) is somewhat unclear or inconsistent. Time passes with only vague references to seasons.Characters: 3 -- Main characters are mostly relatable, realistic, interesting, and/or dynamic. There were things I appreciated about both Alicia and Cole, for sure, but they were each also flawed, and they were flaws I found more irritating than sympathetic for the most part. Minor characters and villains are almost exclusively stereotyped or simplified, though we do get to know some better than others. Relationships between characters are not especially well developed, but what is there is generally good. Alicia and Cole do, in the end, have a solid relationship, but the nature of the plot makes it hard to see it forming along the way.Mechanics and Writing: 3.5 -- A handful of typos, punctuation issues, or word errors, and a few choices that hinder understanding. Though historically accurate, the use of outdated words like 'vail' for a tip, or 'tiger' as the boy in charge of horses, is actually a bit off-putting. Probably more so because before we got to those words, the French phrase 'je ne sais quoi" was written 'je ne said quais,' which left me doubting the accuracy of the rest of her writing. It might be an older spelling of the French I suppose, but as that's not clear, it didn't work. Good use of POV (Alicia and Cole). Generally skillful writing. Evidence of careful planning and writing for the most part.Redeeming Value: 3.5 -- Incidental uplifting themes or lessons. Alicia learns to look beyond appearances to find love and hold true to her marriage vows. She also learns to forgive. Cole learns that even well-intentioned lies can have complicated consequences. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, but some definitely shaky ground, eg: duels, fights, piracy, lies, attempted rape, lots of flirtation and attempted seduction of Alicia by Cole (who knows full well she's married to Nicholas), deception that makes things seem more morally reprehensible than they really are.Personal Enjoyment: 3 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn’t mind re-reading it someday, but it’s not a priority.

This was a super exciting Regency Romance. Dire circumstances have cast Alicia Palmer—the heroine—as a fortune hunter. If she does not marry a rich gentleman within the month, her uncle and her sister and her will be cast into debtor’s prison. As unsavory men are thrown into her path, she feels only fear and revulsion…but is saved when the kind Cole Amesbury comes to her rescue. Too bad he harbors a secret that makes her hate him when she discovers it. This story had lots of delicious twists that kept surprising me. I loved the characters. They were amazing…and I can’t wait now to read the rest of this Rogue Hearts series to see Cole’s brothers in action. I highly recommend this one. It was amazing.
